We made it past Labor Day, which means the weather is supposed to be cooling off. For where I live in north Texas, that’s still going to be a few days or even weeks away. But something that isn’t far off is… football season. High school and college ball has already started, and the professionals aren’t far behind. And that means people are going to get together either at the stadiums for tailgate parties or at someone’s house for a watch party for their favorite teams.
So, this week I decided to take a small detour from the usual dinner items and offer up something that could fit right at home with anyone heading to a game or planning to enjoy one at home. I’ve posted a few game-like snack foods before, including one that’s very similar to this (you’ll find it here). But this one is pure fun… think an open-faced Sloppy Joe on toasted garlic bread, and that’s pretty close to what this is. It’s a snap to make and practically guaranteed to be a hit with everyone at your get-together.

Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 400 F. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper.
-
Slice the bread loaf in half lengthwise. Combine the butter, garlic powder, and salt, then spread evenly on both open halves of the loaf. Place the bread on the baking sheet and toast in the oven for 10 minutes. When finished remove the bread from the oven and set aside, and adjust the oven temperature to 350 F.
-
While the bread is toasting, combine the ground beef and onion in a medium skillet and cook over medium-high heat until the meat is browned, breaking into crumbles as it cooks. Drain off any excess grease.
-
Add the ketchup, water, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, garlic powder, salt, and pepper, and stir to combine. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. The mixture will thicken slightly.
-
Spread the meat mixture evenly on both halves of the bread loaf, making sure to spread it as close to the edges as possible. Combine the Cheddar and Pepper Jack cheeses, then spread evenly on top of the meat mixture, again getting as close to the edges as possible.
-
Place the bread back into the oven and cook for 10 minutes or until the cheese has melted. If desired, switch the oven to Broil and toast the top for 1-2 minutes before removing.
-
Let rest about 5 minutes before cutting and serving. Garnish with parsley if desired.
