You’re probably looking at the title of this recipe and scratching your head. Egg rolls that taste like bacon cheeseburgers? Yes, that’s exactly what we have here. And I’m not the first one to make them, either. Depending on who you talk to, the credit goes to either a Disney restaurant or the Cheesecake Factory for the dish, and the Internet for the idea to use an air fryer to cook them.

These egg rolls are listed as appetizers, but like many other foods, you could easily make a meal out of them as well. There are plenty of ways to “accessorize” them too; I’ll list a few of those ideas in the recipe notes.

This is a bit of a milestone for me – it’s the first time I’ve used an air fryer to cook anything other than a frozen pizza. It was relatively easy to use, and definitely better than having to deal with a skillet full of hot oil on the stove, both for cooking and cleanup afterward. But, if you don’t have an air fryer that’s okay; I’ll include the steps for cooking these in oil in the notes as well.

Description

A different twist on an egg roll - filled with all the makings for a bacon cheeseburger. While these are prepared in an air fryer, they can be cooked in oil as well.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. If using bacon strips, cook in a large skillet over medium-high heat until crispy, then remove to a plate with a paper towel and drain the grease from the skillet. Add the ground beef to the skillet and brown over medium-high heat, breaking the meat into crumbles as it cooks.  Push the meat to one side and add the onion, and saute for 2-3 minutes. Mix the meat and onion together and remove from heat.

  2. Add the Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper, and mix thoroughly. Add the cheese, bacon (either crumble the bacon strips or use precooked bacon crumbles), and relish, and mix thoroughly. Cover and set aside to allow the cheese to melt and the mixture to cool to room temperature (roughly 3o minutes).

  3. To make each roll, start by placing a wrap on a cutting board so that it looks like a diamond with the corners facing left-right-up-down. Place 3-4 tablespoons of the meat mixture along the bottom third of the wrap. Wet the edges of the wrap with water, then fold the corner nearest you up and over the filling, tucking the point in, Fold the left and right corners toward the center, then continue rolling forward tightly until the edges are sealed. Repeat for the remaining wraps.

  4. Make an egg wash by mixing one egg in a small bowl with water. Brush the egg wash over the rolls, covering both sides.

  5. Lightly spray the air fryer basket with a nonstick cooking spray. Place the egg rolls in the basket, being careful not to crowd them (you will probably need to prepare them in batches). Cook at 400 F for 8 minutes, turning them halfway through cooking.
