In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. When hot, add the sausage and onion and cook until the sausage has browned and the onion is translucent, about 5-7 minutes.
2 Add the pasta, chicken broth, barbecue sauce, heavy cream, and garlic powder, and stir to combine. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and cover. Simmer 10-12 minutes or until the pasta is cooked and the sauce has thickened. Taste and season with salt and pepper if desired.
3 Remove from heat. Add the shredded cheese and stir to combine. Allow the cheese to melt and blend completely. Serve immediately, garnishing with parsley if desired.

Notes
- Any smoked sausage can be used - pork, beef, turkey, chicken, etc.
- For a sweeter taste increase the amount of barbecue sauce
- For a spicier taste add red pepper flakes, cayenne pepper, or replace part of the honey barbecue sauce with a spicy barbecue sauce
- Half and half can be substituted for the heavy whipping cream for a lighter sauce.
