Springtime… warm weather, flowers, birds singing… and here in Texas, storm season. This has been a pretty nasty weekend for weather, with severe thunderstorms blowing around the area taking down trees and knocking out power. Fortunately we’ve managed to miss all of the mayhem… for now. But not to worry – hurricane season is coming soon enough.
But enough about the weather; we’re here to talk about food. Good food. Different food. After all, that’s what this site is all about – trying new things (or at least new to me). This time it’s definitely a different sort of meal. It combines smoked sausage, pasta, honey barbecue sauce, and Cheddar cheese to make a creamy dish with a tangy taste. I didn’t think this combination would taste good, but I was happily mistaken. And it takes hardly any time at all to put together, making it a great choice for a weeknight meal. While it should easily fit in a large skillet, I decided to use a Dutch oven because, well, I wanted to.

Ingredients
Instructions
-
In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. When hot, add the sausage and onion and cook until the sausage has browned and the onion is translucent, about 5-7 minutes.
-
Add the pasta, chicken broth, barbecue sauce, heavy cream, and garlic powder, and stir to combine. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and cover. Simmer 10-12 minutes or until the pasta is cooked and the sauce has thickened. Taste and season with salt and pepper if desired.
-
Remove from heat. Add the shredded cheese and stir to combine. Allow the cheese to melt and blend completely. Serve immediately, garnishing with parsley if desired.

Notes
- Any smoked sausage can be used - pork, beef, turkey, chicken, etc.
- For a sweeter taste increase the amount of barbecue sauce
- For a spicier taste add red pepper flakes, cayenne pepper, or replace part of the honey barbecue sauce with a spicy barbecue sauce
- Half and half can be substituted for the heavy whipping cream for a lighter sauce.
