Manna Sandwich

This one has a brief story...

I came across this on Pinterest, which said the sandwich originated at a restaurant called Hoody's Hoagies in Claxton, Georgia. I was curious and decided to see if the claim was true. Sure enough, Hoody's Hoagies does exist... and according to an article written several years ago this sandwich was the first item they offered to their customers. They still offer it to this day, and freely give out the recipe to anyone who asks for it.

This type of sandwich is sometimes referred to as a "loose meat" sandwich, meaning the meat is not in slices like sliced ham or turkey (or sliced meatloaf, for that matter). It's held together by the sauce and cheese, which is melted just prior to the meat being added. It's very easy to make and has a very "down home" flavor.

Description

An easy-to-make "loose meat" sandwich with a down-home flavor thanks to a special sauce.

Adapted from Hoody's Hoagies (recipe published by Garden & Gun)

Ingredients
    Sauce
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 cup Catalina or French dressing
  • 6 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1/4 cup spicy brown mustard
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • Sandwich
  • 1/2 cup onion, diced
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon dried parsley
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 6 hoagie rolls (6 inch)
  • 1/4 pound Swiss cheese, sliced
Instructions
  1. Make the sauce by combining all ingredients in a medium bowl and mix together thoroughly. Set aside.

  2. In a large skillet, add onions, water, soy sauce, parsley, basil, and garlic powder. Cook over high heat for 3-5 minutes or until most of the liquid has cooked off.

  3. Add ground beef to the skillet and mix thoroughly. Cook about 10 minutes or until the meat has browned. While the meat is cooking, set the oven to Broil. When finished cooking, drain off any excess grease.

  4. Split the hoagie rolls and lay them flat on a baking sheet. Generously spread sauce over both halves and place cheese on the top half. Broil the rolls in the oven for 1-2 minutes or until the cheese melts. Add ground beef mixture, fold the tops over, and serve.

Notes
  • This recipe makes a lot more sauce than is needed for the sandwiches. You can either reduce the amount of sauce made or refrigerate the extra to use later.
  • You can substitute other cheeses (Cheddar, American, etc.) for the Swiss cheese if desired
