Bacon Cheeseburger Mac & Cheese

Have you ever purchased an item in the grocery store and noticed there was a recipe printed on the back of the package? Have you ever tried to make that recipe to see how it turns out (other than Green Bean Casserole, which is almost always printed on the back of every can of green beans, can of cream of mushroom soup, and box of French fried onions)?

I decided to give one of these "back of the box" recipes a try. This one was printed on the back of a box of Kraft Deluxe Mac & Cheese. I have to say at first I expected it to taste like a familiar "meal helper" dinner which will remain nameless, but the upscaled ingredients (especially the cheese sauce in the mac & cheese) gave it a much richer taste. I'm sure adding the green onion topping (which I left off when I prepared it) would have added that much more depth to the dish.

Oddly enough, this recipe is not listed on the Kraft Foods website, but found only on the back of the Deluxe Mac & Cheese box.

Description

This recipe was printed on the back of a box of Kraft Deluxe Mac & Cheese. It might look and sound like a popular "meal helper" dinner, but the upscaled ingredients give this a much richer flavor.

Adapted from Kraft Foods (this recipe is not listed on the Kraft Foods website, but found only on the back of the Deluxe Mac & Cheese box)

Ingredients
  • 1 package Kraft Deluxe Original Mac & Cheese (14 oz)
  • 2 slices bacon
  • 1/2 pound lean ground beef
  • 1/2 cup yellow onion, diced
  • 1/4 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 1 tablespoon sweet relish
  • ketchup (for garnish)
  • sliced green onion (for garnish)
Instructions
  1. In a large saucepan, prepare the mac & cheese as directed on the package and set aside.

  2. In a large skillet, cook the bacon over medium heat until crisp. Remove from the skillet and set aside to drain. Add ground beef and onion to the skillet and cook in the bacon drippings until the meat is evenly browned, stirring frequently and crumbling it as it cooks.

  3. Add the meat mixture, shredded cheese, and relish to the mac & cheese and stir until evenly blended. Serve topped with crumbled bacon; drizzle with ketchup and garnish with sliced green onions if desired.
